Interview with ANNETTE KRUISBRINK

Where were you born and educated?

I was born in 1958 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I started with piano lessons when I was 8 years old. My mother played the piano for hours a day so at a very young age I became familiar with the classical piano repertoire. But when I was 13 I choose the guitar as my favorite instrument and I started to compose for the guitar. At the age of 18 I entered the conservatory and studied during 6 years with the famous Maestro Pieter van der Staak. After that I studied (at the same conservatory in Zwolle) composition with Alex Manassen. Besides that, I had vihuela and flamenco guitar lessons and became an official piano technician (piano tuner).

What kind of music do you compose and create?

Actually I am working in all kinds of musical fields. I.e.: I write in various styles and genres and in different levels of difficulty, depending on the kind of commission I get or in what kind of mood I am. As I am a guitarist I write mostly for the guitar and the guitar in combination with other instruments.

Did you face any obstacles in your carrier ? What kind of obstacles?

No, not really. When I was young I listened to some wise words by a famous Dutch author: “If you want to be a writer, then be a writer”. From then on I only focused on being a musician and a composer. When you focus well and work hard you can break through barriers, you actually don’t see them as obstacles then, but it’s more or less as navigating between objects.

What do you think could be done to help women working in music business?

I would like to put the question like this: What do you think could be done to help women working in music! . . . and NOT: ‘in music business’. Leave the business away and focus on creativity instead, that is the greatest help anyone can give to her- or himself. The rest will come. And of course governments, authorities, foundations, etcetera should help by creating opportunities for creating by creators!
