Biography
Born in the USA (1930) and resident in Vienna, she is an internationally known for her music in large forms: 26 works for orchestra, 9 operas and music theatre pieces, and chamber works. She studied at the Eastmann School of Music and Wellesley College (BA), completed an M.Mus in composition at the University of Mississippi, received the Doctor of Music in composition from Florida State University and did postgraduate study in electronic music at Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire. She was a faculty member at nine universities in the USA and in 1985 taught at the Jakarta Conservatory in Indonesia. In Vienna she has been a faculty member at the Institute for European Studies, Webster University, and the Indiana University School of Music programme in Austria. She participated in the UNESCO World music Council meeting in Los Angeles in 2005, has been a nominator for the Kyoto Prize in Music since its inception 20 years ago and is President of Vienna Modern Masters. In 1975 she founded the International League of Women Composers and continues her advocacy of women composers with the Nancy Van de Vate International Composition prize for Opera. She has been a member of the International Honour Committee of the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica for many years.
