Aletta
Aletta, instituut voor vrouwengeschiedenis (voorheen het Internationaal Informatiecentrum en Archief van de Vrouwenbeweging, IIAV) in Amsterdam, is een kenniscentrum en archief. Het is dé vraagbaak, leverancier en bemiddelaar van informatie en documentatie voor wie zich bezighoudt met de positie van vrouwen in heden en verleden.
Aletta werd opgericht in 1935 door drie feministen om het cultureel erfgoed van vrouwen te bewaren en onderzoek te bevorderen naar de positie van vrouwen in de maatschappij.
De collectie omvat boeken, tijdschriften, archieven, muziekwerken, foto’s en databases met informatie van en over vrouwen. Aletta beheert een schat aan kennis voor wetenschappelijk onderzoekers en studenten, en voor scholieren en docenten in het middelbaar onderwijs. Aletta levert ook kennis en expertise op maat voor vrouwenorganisaties, beleidsmakers, journalisten, programmamakers en zakelijke instellingen. Aletta wil door het bewaren van de geschiedenis inspireren, de kennis vergroten over de positie van vrouwen en onderzoek op dit gebied bevorderen. Zo wil Aletta bijdragen aan de emancipatie en positieverbetering van vrouwen.
Een van de speciale collecties die Aletta beheert is de collectie Vrouw en muziek. Deze omvat een collectie bladmuziek van ongeveer 400 vrouwelijke componisten en cd’s met uitvoeringen van hun werk. Ook worden biografische gegevens over vrouwelijke componisten verzameld. De collectie was oorspronkelijk van de Stichting Vrouw & Muziek. In 2005 werd de collectie partituren en cd’s overgedragen aan Aletta.
Aletta, Institute for Women’s History, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands is a knowledge institute, library, information centre and archive.
The organization was founded in 1935 by three feminists to collect and preserve women’s cultural heritage and to encourage scholarly research about women’s position in society. Aletta Institute was known as the International Information Centre and Archive for the Women’s Movement (IIAV) until August 2009. Currently around 30 staff members work for Aletta.
By collecting and making women’s cultural heritage available, Aletta aims to inspire, to expand knowledge on the position of women and to promote research in this area. The collections of Aletta Institute contain archives, books, articles, periodicals, pictures, posters, objects and databases with full text information.
The extensive library and periodicals collection provides a comprehensive picture of women and their position in society both today and in the past. One of the many special collections of Aletta is on Women and Music. It contains sheet music from about 400 female composers, as well as CDs of the music being performed. Moreover biographical data on women composers is being collected. The collection originally belonged to the Dutch Foundation for Women in Music (Stichting Vrouw en Muziek) and was transferred to Aletta Institute in 2005.

Stichting Vrouw en Muziek
In 1985 werd voor het eerst in Nederland op grote schaal aandacht gevraagd voor de positie van de vrouw in de muziek. In november van dat jaar organiseerde de Stichting Gaudeamus een driedaags 'Festival Vrouwen en Muziek' in de IJsbreker te Amsterdam. Tijdens dit festival, dat met groot enthousiasme door pers en publiek werd ontvangen, werd het initiatief genomen om een organisatie op te richten die in de toekomst de aandacht voor de vrouw in de muziek levend moest houden. Componisten, musicologen en musici vormden de Werkgroep (vanaf 1987 Stichting) Vrouw en Muziek, die zich ten doel stelde, door het organiseren van concerten, lezingen en tentoonstellingen en het stimuleren van wetenschappelijk onderzoek meer belangstelling te kweken voor het scheppend aandeel van vrouwen in de muziek. Sindsdien heeft Vrouw en Muziek onder andere een groot aantal concerten georganiseerd, publicaties uitgebracht, een documentatiecentrum opgebouwd en diverse nieuwsbrieven uitgegeven. Stichting Vrouw en Muziek organiseert zo mogelijk jaarlijks een LuisterSalon. Hier kunnen bezoekers muziekopnames in allerlei stijlen van vrouwelijke componisten in Nederland beluisteren in een rustige, speciaal ingerichte ruimte. Veel van de componistes zijn aanwezig en er is een tafelexpositie met informatie, cd's en boeken. Alle leden van Stichting vrouw en muziek verrichten hun werkzaamheden onbezoldigd.

The Stichting Vrouw en Muziek (Dutch Women and Music Foundation) is a national organization located in Amsterdam and has been established in 1987 to 'organize and stimulate activities to improve the interest into the creative work of women in music.' A series of activities has since been developed that resulted in a wide variety of projects and publications. During its first 20 years the foundation has collected a large archive of scores, compositions, audio- and videotapes, news clippings and photographs. This archive has been transferred to Aletta, institute for women's history. After working many years on a volunteer basis, the national government acknowledged the importance of the foundation with a four-year grant for the period 2001-2004. Together with additional external funds, numerous new activities were undertaken, such as: the development of a strategic communication policy; the development of a website, accessible in Dutch and English; a digital catalogue of its archive, including audiovisual materials, scores, and literature; the presentation of various projects, including concert series and publications, often in conjunction with other organizations. In 2005 it was decided to shift the focus from 'female composers' to 'the creative work of women in music’, in line with the foundation's initial statutes. The foundation will now also address for example musical performance art, improvised music and female musicians. The support of the conference "Cathy Berberian: Pioneer of Contemporary Vocality and Performance" is an example thereof. Since 2005, all members of the Dutch Women and Music Foundation work on a volunteer basis.
