Intervista con SAVVIA KOZAKOU

Where were you born and educated?

I was born in Cyprus in 1982. I studied composition at the ARTE Music Academy of Cyprus where I was awarded the Higher National Diploma in Music studies. I also studied Music Composition at Middlesex University. I graduated with BA Honours in Music and was awarded the Turton Prize for Music composition in the same year. In 2007 I was accepted on the Goldsmiths College (University of London) MMUS program in Composition (acoustic). During my studies the Allegri String Quartet performed my compositions. I also composed music for short films, dancers, ensembles and musicians.

What kind of music do you compose and create?

In my compositions, there is always a classical approach present in relation to modern elements. I could say that this interconnection produces the presence of a theme as the fundamental element of my music which flows and develops through modern chapters. The final effect is a deeper analysis of this reciprocality.

Did you face any obstacles in your career? What kind of obstacles?

I wouldn't say that I faced essential obstacles during my music career but I've encountered many challenges. I have met intelligent musicians and great people, who have helped and taught me how to gain and learn from these challenges.

What do you think could be done to help women working in music business?

I believe that in the past women may not have enjoyed the representation and recognition that they deserved in the music industry. However, I think that things are changing and these days, I don’t see any inequality per se. I believe that women should act independently and with confidence. The most important things for womens are: to stay true to their vision and to act and create as professionals.
