Makiko Hirabayashi

(born in 1966, in Tokyo, Japan), Danish composer. She began her studies of classical music at the age of four and was educated at Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) and at the Rhythmic Conservatory (Copenhagen, Denmark). She has been living in Copenhagen since 1990 and works as composer/pianist/keyboardplayer in various styles of music, with strong interest in jazz, ethnic music from different parts of the world and classical music. She releases on Enja Records with Makiko Hirabayashi Trio feat. percussionist/drummer, Marilyn Mazur and bassist, Klavs Hovman. She collaborated with French flutist Mariane Bitran on the quintet album Grey To Blue, and with trumpet/fl├╝gelhorn player, Flemming Agerskov on Binocular. She has performed at major jazz venues and festivals in Europe, Japan, South Africa and Brazil.

Awards: She won three prizes at European Jazz Contest, Belgium '95 with Sisters; The second album, Hide and Seek (Enja '09) received Jazz Audio Disk Award for Best Instrumental Album '09 and Jazz Melody Award for the title tune in Jazz Critique Magazine, Japan
