Maria Faust

(born in 1979 in Kuressaare, Estonia, resident in Copenhagen) saxophonist and composer. She holds a Master's Degree in jazz saxophone from the Conservatory of Music in Esbjerg and studied classical conducting, and early music at the Academy of Music in Tallinn. She leads the orchestras Maria Faust Group, Maria Faust Jazz Catastrophe and Pistol nr. 9, and is a member of Two Eggs and a Chicken and Constellations with Nina De Heney, Liudas Mockunas, Tristan Honsinger and Qarin Wikström. She has performed in Denmark, Sweden. Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, China and Estonia. Trained in both the classical and jazz tradition, Estonian saxophone player and composer Maria Faust unites both worlds and throws in a healthy dose of vibrant folk music on the album Warrior Horse (2010), the successful follow-up to Bitchslap Boogie, released in 2008.

Awards: Composer of the year, Danish Music Awards 2013; she was recipient of The Danish Art Foundation's Work Grant in 2011, and winner of the Uno Naisso-competition for young composers in Estonia.
