Marketa Dvorakova

(born and resident in Czech Republic), composer. She studied composition with Jan Grossmann and Edvard Schiffauer (Conservatory of Ostrava 1992-98), with Leos Faltus (Janacek Academy of Music, Brno-master degree studies 1998-2003) and Ivo Medek (Janacek Academy of Music, Brno, doctoral studies 2004-present); composition courses in Cesky Krumlov. She is member of the women composers' collective "Hudbaby"and the ensemble "Marijan".
Selected works: Mute conversation for vibraphone and percussion, 1995; Like loreta chimes, for young female voice and string quartet, 1996; Sleeping beauty on text by J.Zacek, for mixed chorus, 1997; Bigl - piano cycle for young pianists, 1998 [published by Ritornel, Ostrava]; Three times on the same topic-movement for symphony orchestra, 1998 [premiered by the Janacek philharmonic with Otakar Trhlik, conductor]; Five movements for flute and alto flute, 1999; Short story for percussion, 2000; Giraffe's opera chamber opera, 2001, on text by Jacques Prevert [premiered at Stavovske theatre in Prague on 10.11.2002]; Fires for multimedia, 2002, co-authored with Ivo Medek and Jan Kavan; Waters-6-movement symphony for large orchestra, 2003 [premiered by the Brno philharmonic and Emil Skotak on 30.1.2003].
Awards: For the national competition of young composers "Generace": 1st prize in 1993 (Leave Words Behind The Doors), 3rd prize in 1994 (I entrust you with my life), 2nd prize in 1999 (Non-Green Man), 3rd prize in 2001 (concertino for saxophone, string orchestra, and percussion), 2nd prize in 2003 (Moments), 2nd prize in 2004 (Naked Reptile), honourable mention in 2005 (Left Ideas); nomination for the Alfred Radok award (2002), the Leos Janacek award (2003), the Ministry of Culture award (2003).
