Boel Dirke

(born in Gothenburg, 1962, resident Stockholm/Sweden) is a jazz pianist, singer and composer. She studied at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm 1982-1986. She has worked as a composer and freelance musician with various theatre groups in Sweden. In 1990-94 Dirke went to New York to study jazz improvisation with Lia Gorrill. Back in Sweden she worked as a pianist and vocalist with a trio called Other Street Music together with Andy Fite guitar and voice and Ulf Ålerhielm double bass. She has performed in the US as well as in Scandinavia in concerts, jazz clubs, and festivals and in TV broadcasts. In 1994 she wrote music to a chamber opera based on a poetry collection by the Swedish poet Bodil Malmsten, called Damen, det brinner! Dirke is working as a pedagogue as well. Her influences are artist such as: Lennie Tristano, Liz Gorrill, Warne Marsh, Louis Armstrong, Lester Young among others.
