Yumi Hara Cawkwell

Born on the 20th July 1960 in Tokyo, studied medicine in Japan and practised as a psychiatrist before moving to the UK in 1993. In 1999, she graduated in music from City University in London with a first-class honours degree, and has completed her PhD in composition at City University under Rhian Samuel in 2005. Her groundbreaking works challenging geographical boundaries and the divisions between genres have gained critical acclaim and several awards, and she was a finalist in the British Composer Awards 2006. Her music has been commissioned and performed by leading contemporary music ensembles such as PianoCircus and Keynote+ at major festivals including FuseLeeds, The Cutting Edge and Druskomania, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. She also performs improvised music on piano and voice and released a number of CDs. Yumi is Senior Lecturer in Music at University of East London.
