Catharina Backman

(born in Stockholm, 1961, resident Stockholm/Sweden) is a composer, accordionist, variety artist and jazz pianist. Backman has studied jazz improvisation and classical piano at Skurups Folkhögsskola. She also studied composition with Maurice Karkoff, Hans Gefors, Rolf Martinsson, Kent Olofsson och Javier Alvarez and graduated in composition at Malmö Academy of Music in 2000. Backman has a long experience as a jazz pianist and was also the music director of Varieté Vauduvill from 1984-1993. She has also worked with the own group Katzen Kapell, as a freelancing concert and theatre musician and as a choral director. She was elected as a member in the Society of Swedish Composers 2001. She has mainly composed dramatic works of music and often works with scenic and music dramatic expressions in her music.
