Irene Becker

(born in 1951 in Aalborg, Denmark, resident in Copehnagen), pianist and composer. After obtaining a MA in music from the Department of Musicology at University of Copenhagen, she studied at Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York in 1980 with Karlheinz Berger and Nana Vasconcelos, and composition with Bob Brookmeyer at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen in the years 1996-98. Since 1980 she has been a member of New Jungle Orchestra and since 1978 of the Quartet Thermænius, which now performs as Dørge-Becker-Carlsen. Travels and tours to Gambia, Ghana, Bali, Siberia, China among others have given her opportunity to field studies and inspiration from the old music cultures of these places. Irene Becker has been working together with musicians and composers from Hanoi Music Conservatory. She has also composed for big band, chamber-ensembles and choirs, as well as film and theatre scores. She has composed songs, choir pieces, music for smaller and larger ensembles, big band, film music, documentary film for television programs, jingles, and theater music. Since 2008 she is member of the Danish Unesco National Commission, and in 2005/2006 she served as a member of Nomus, Nordic Music Committee.
